Hi Herb. Nice song and your piano parts are good. It is a highly emotive song and I believe that it requires a real person to convey the passion of its message. btw Did you try POPPNOL.STY (Pop Piano Liverpool Ballad) slow tempo around 60-65 ?

The lead section is dull, dynamically, until the guitar pops up and saves it.
Is that referring to the cover, or the original? I'm not sure. I didn't find the difference to be quite so contrasting. I went back and listened to both. There was similarity in dynamics from both performances.
a) OUTSTANDING COVER doesn't leave room for qualification. Perhaps "Outstanding cover of 'Rosanna' by Toto by this young college band if you are a little forgiving"? b) It's oldish, MOR and the sort of song that's on high rotation on classic channels. That they've selected such a one for it's chops as well makes it an interesting choice. c) The post & my comments were/are about the cover. The solo/lead section part played by the keyboard, to my ears, lacks dynamics...the guitar kicks it up a notch and makes the most of that contrast - smart playing. Similar dynamics in the original & cover don't preclude a section lacking dynamics.

The solo guitar sounds like it comes from a completely different era and just to me doesn't really seem like it fits in with the other instruments in the mix or the feel. But it certainly is a high energy and snappy song and I really like it a lot.
Thanks David, I agree about the solo guitar. I auditioned dozens before settling and, subsequent to reading your comment, another dozen this morning. There aren't any solos guitars in my RT sets that have the right tone & vibe. Almost al are distorted rather than over driven that little bit that would be ace. Not enough DI guitars either. Brent Mason comes close sonically but he always sounds like he can't help pick'n a little chicken no matter what he plays so he didn't fit either. I found a variation on what I had and did a mass of multi riff rewriting to get something more single string...I'll post it tonight..

Thanks GH, The jangle secret for this track was a) open chords & b) an ACTONE pedal by Joyo. I've reduced the top end in the guitar bus and a little in the vox as well...thanks for the detail. I'll update the file tonight.

Thanks DC, I'm pleased you like it - nothing wrong with POP...TRex, Slade, AC/DC etc. were all pop bands from start to finish - their fans grew up & simply "legitimized" them with the rock tag.

Re: Using BIAB in various time signatures 5/4, 12/8, 6/8, 9/8, 11/4 etc. PeterGannon 2 hours ago Forum: Recording, Mixing, Performance and Production Jump to new postsJump to new posts
Dave, Nice tune and performances. Regarding the tempo and time signature.. Putting aside DAWS and plugins for a minute, and only thinking musically…. (So we won’t be discussing BiaB, or DAWS or plugins). We are talking about the world of music, as has been established and refined for hundreds of years). And the issue under discussion is what is the tempo of your song, in 6/8 time signature, 1. - The tempo of your song is 50 bpm (not 75) . Tap your foot, and I guarantee you (and every other musician) is tapping it at 50. No one will be tapping at 75 ( because that would be the tempo of two of the triplets, which is 2/3 of a beat and that’s not a beat. ) 2. - Like other 6/8 tempos, there are three 8th notes per beat ( not two). This is indicated on a leadsheet by the symbol dotted quarter note = 50. The attached graphic demonstrates this, it is piano man (Billy Joel, 6/8 tempo 58 bpm) and you can see the tempo marking is a DOTTED quarter note, which means THREE 8th notes = 1 beat. Not two. The idea of three 8th notes being one beat has been (and remains) an important concept in music for at least 300 years, and they call it a COMPOUND TIME SIGNATURE. (The compound time signatures are 6/8, 9/8, 12/8). 3. So that means the same idea for your song. Each of those triplets is an 8th note, and 3 of them equals a beat, where you tap your foot. And you will be tapping your foot at 50, which is the correct tempo of your song. So.. are we in agreement so far? (And remember, we are initially not talking about BiaB or DAWS, just talking musically). If we agree on these points, I am happy to continue the discussion where I’ll explain what’s going wrong in your DAW to introduce the incorrect idea of a tempo of 75. ‘And a reminder, please view the attached Piano Man graphic, that shows the dotted quarter note = 58 graphic, which means that there are triplets, and three triplets is a beat, and the tempo of piano man is 58 bpm . Understanding this is essential to understandings compound time signatures like 6/8.

I'm a longtime fan of the MDR-7506 since they were introduced in 1991. Although I have mixed on them in a pinch, I would never use 'em for my final. I don't have an issue with the 'phones wearing out except the ear pads and those do disintegrate in a year or two. All of mine have these now. Auray Genuine Sheepskin Leather Earpads (Pair) The Steven Slate Audio VSX Headphone Mixing System, OTOH, works quite well for me. I can trust these. Most of my work is done on a pair of very nice Equator monitors with a sub. When I have a mix sounding great on those and the VSX, they will translate to anything.

I listened to a lot of Styles that contained the name [Chicago] but nearly all didn't have any brass instruments. _FRAME.STY was about the only one that included Horns. it was suggested for the song 'Feeling Stronger Every Day'. Memo: This smooth jazz style features a 10-part horn section backed by guitar, piano, bass, and drums. -Examples: Feels So Good, Breezin'. Local Hero, Genre "Intensity" Score=76/100 _FRAME.STY. That is a book everyone who's serious about this business should have on their shelves and should have read at least once, to get a good understanding of the basic business practices in the music industry. It's handy to refer back to it on occasion as well. I actually had 2 copies at one time but gave one of my copies to a young musician who was asking me a lot of questions so I figured he would benefit from the book and I didn't need two copies on my shelf. I think This Business of Music is out of print now.
I know the book and many others. My problem with This Business of Music by Shemel & Krasilovsky is that the 5th Edition was published in 1985 and the 10th Edition was 2007. Everything about the music business has changed except for the merch table. Even what was once consiidered bedrock info about Copyright registration and the PROs no longer applies. For years, my #1 recommendation was Making It With Music: Kenny Rogers' Guide to the Music Business written after his bands broke up and before his solo career took off. It's still a good book on how to manage the business end of a band and not blow through all of your money and songwriting credits but as a guide to anything outside that bubble, it's useless. It's still entertaining and he told some great stories about long ago and far away. The Brabecs' (2018) and my distant cousin's (2017) are far newer but still beyond obsolete. Peter Thall's What They'll Never Tell You About the Music Business: The Myths, the Secrets, the Lies (And a Few Truths), while a good read, hasn't been updated since 2017. No, I can't recommend any of them except the Passman which is too bad. I hope he puts out a supplement in the fall instead of waiting a few years to do a major update.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
